How did it all begin?
Negli ultimi anni, molte di noi si sono appassionate a questo stile dall’aspetto “trasandato” ma elegante che conosciamo con il nome di Shabby chic, ma forse non tutte ne conosciamo le origini.
During these last years, many of us got passionate of this apparently “untidy” but elegant style known as Shabby Chic, but not all of us know its origins.
Il termine “Shabby chic” é stato coniato per la prima volta dalla rivista specialistica “The world of interiors” negli anni 80.
“Shabby chic” is a definition used for the first time by the trade magazine “The world of interiors” during the 80’s.
Solo negli anni 90 é divenuto popolare negli Stati Uniti attraverso Rachel Ashwell che lo identifica come uno stile; i cui cardini sono: il comfort, la bellezza dell’imperfezione, il fascino degli oggetti consumati , la purezza e la semplicità della vita pratica.
Only in the 90s it did become popular in the United States, thanks to Rachel Ashwell, who describes it as a style characterized by its comfort, the beauty of imperfection, the fascination of worn objects , the cleanliness and simplicity of a plain life.
Rachel, attraverso i “suoi” mobili usurati, realizza ambienti accoglienti e confortevoli, in cui la persona si sente a proprio agio, rilassata ed allo stesso tempo possa assaporare la forza ed i sapori di un tempo passato.
Rachel, through her worn furniture, creates a cozy and comfortable environment, where anyone can feel at ease, relaxed and at the same time can experience the strength of the past and the taste of it.
Il punto di partenza di tutto questo? Recupero di mobili e complementi dalle soffitte o dai mercatini.
The starting point is the rrecovery of furniture and accessories from ceilings or flea markets.
La caratteristica principale è quella che i mobili e gli accessori possano mostrare senza vergogna l’usura del tempo (autentica o ricreata)
The main feature is that the furniture and the accessories can unashamedly show the wear and tear of time, real or created.
Gli oggetti non sono già solo quello che appaiono ma possono diventare elementi per essere reinventati nelle loro funzioni.
Objects are not only what they appear to be, they become beautiful objects, whose functions can be reinvented.
I colori, oltre al bianco (che la fa da padrone in tutte le sue sfumature), sono prevalentemente sbiancati, pastello, neutri o naturali, nello specifico si definiscono fanè, termine che richiama un effetto talcato della superficie, tipico di questo stile mai lucido, ma piuttosto “polveroso”.
The colors which are mainly used are any shade of white, washed out pastel, neutre o natural. The term used is “fanè”, which describes a tipically powdery effect of the surfaces, which in this style can never be shiny, but only “dusty”.

Anche se inizialmente questo stile si rifaceva soprattutto agli interni country dei vecchi cottage inglesi, ben presto si é ampliato e strutturato traendo ispirazione da vari stili come quello francese, il provenzale, gustaviano e nordico.
Even if at its beginnings this style referred back to the interiors of old country english cottages, it soon grew and expanded, getting inspiration from different styles such as French, Provenzal, Gustavian and Nordic.
Le mille sfaccettature di questo stile sono in continuo divenire e continuano ad intrecciarsi con influenze fra i vecchio e il nuovo per ricreare magia ed emozioni.
The thousands nuances of this style are ever-changing, mixing and matching old and new to create magic and emotion.

Recuperare da soffitte e mercatini e’ una passione che ho da sempre. Applicando questo stile, soprattutto utilizzando il bianco, si trasformano i mobili, e non solo, in modo incantevole.
Finalmente un articolo chiaro ed esauriente su uno stile affascinante che attualmente ha tantissimo seguito, soprattutto per la possibilità di recuperare gli oggetti, donandogli una nuova “chance”!
